The Pennsylvania Initiative…
Engineers prepared to serve when disaster strikes.

Since forming the Pennsylvania Initiative soon after the 9-11 terrorist attacks on our nation in 2001, Pennsylvania’s volunteer engineers have been called on by various agencies and organizations to assist in disaster recovery. Both the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster call on us for aid.

The situation may be natural or manmade, but the results are the same – people need the skills and expertise only engineers can provide.

When PSPE receives a call for help, volunteer engineers with the skills and expertise that are needed are contacted – usually by e-mail – to determine if they can assist. (There is no pay, but neither is there any obligation.)

Our group will also begin to look at ways in which we can assist communities as needed in preparing for emergencies. In addition, there are plans to reach out to the public to let everyone know what we are doing and how we can help and to keep the issue of protection of our Commonwealth’s citizens and critical infrastructure in the fore of everyone’s mind.

If you would like to join our group, you can sign up online, or download this form and return it by fax.

Watch your mail for an invitation to our first annual meeting during the PSPE Conference, May 20, 2006 at the Sheraton Park Ridge in King of Prussia.

The following quote from Thomas Kean, former governor of the State of New Jersey and chair of the 9/11 Commission expresses the need for action. Mr. Kean was addressing the long list of recommendations that were part of the Commission’s report:

“We know many of these recommendations are going to be implemented. The question is whether they are going to be implemented before the next (terrorist) attack or after it.”

Your involvement now in our Initiative is important and is very much needed. Please join us today.
