Senior Engineer / Project Engineer I – Structure Design

General Summary:
Performs a variety of engineering design/check/review and supervisory functions
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Act as Work Group Leader on small and mid-sized projects.
- Perform general and/or complex design functions, including preliminary and final design, review or checking of designs, engineering computations, specifications, cost estimates, report writing, etc.
- Develop and implement a project work plan.
- Directly assist Other Project Engineers and Work Group Leaders on all projects.
- Mentor less experienced staff.
- Monitor the performance of projects, including quality, schedule, and budget.
- Assist with preparing proposals, letters of interest, supplements, etc.
- Review design and/or shop drawings.
- Conduct and/or assist in visits to project sites, project status meetings, and public meetings.
- Keep up to date with new design technology, construction equipment, and bridge design/construction advancements.
- Provide design support for workshare with other offices.
- May perform bridge inspection as abilities/desires permit.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Relationship to Others:
- Reports to the Department Manager.
- Works with other Engineers, Designers, and Draftspersons.
- Receives assignments from the Department Manager, Project Managers, and Project Engineers.
- Receives guidance from other Work Group Leaders.
- Provides guidance to Engineers, Designers, and Draftspersons.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of and proficiency with PennDOT and other clients’ design manuals, procedures, specifications, standards, computer programs, applicable design codes, engineering software, and plan presentation format.
- Knowledge of and proficiency with refined analytical software (CSI Bridge, Midas, STAAD) is a plus.
- Ability to perform moderate to complex design tasks independently.
- Generate and/or assist in the preparation of specifications.
- Ability to generate, check, or review design and drawings of structural elements.
- Use and general understanding of Bentley MicroStation CAD software; Bentley Open Bridge Software a plus.
- Understand and implement Emotional Intelligence concepts.
- Ability to supervise other members of the design team.
- Ability to communicate with coworkers, clients, and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
- Knowledge of construction techniques for highways/structures.
- Ability to perform Cross-Discipline Reviews.
- Skilled in using word processing, spreadsheet applications, Bluebeam, and “MATHCAD.”
- Ability to assemble Preliminary Engineering Submissions (Pro-Team, TS&L, and Foundation Submission, etc.)
- Assemble or assist in the assembly of Final Design Submissions.
Education and Experience Required
- Education and Experience Required:
- BS degree in civil engineering.
- PE license.
- Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible structure design experience.
