SUMMARY:Webinar | Sustainability and the Beneficial Functions of Natural Floodplains
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 Triple Bottom Line | Planet\, People\, and Profit\nPresenter | Lisa Peterson\, PhD\, PE | Aftan Engineering \nPart 1 will address the topic of sustainability as noted in the NSPE code of ethics professional obligations\, including planet\, people and profit or the triple bottom line. The Life Cycle Assessment methodology will be explained as a tool for assessing environmental impact\, and Life Cycle Costing methodology for the comparable assessment on the financial side. A deep dive into comparison of 4 stormwater management solutions at a commercial development site in rural PA will be used as an example of how life cycle costing and life cycle assessment can be used to support sustainable decision making. The next presentation will take a deep dive into floodplain restoration as a stormwater management solution\, which was 1 of the 4 stormwater management solutions analyzed. \nLearning Objectives \n\nSustainability includes consideration for planet\, people and profit\nThe NSPE Code of Ethics\, Professional Obligations\, includes language about the importance of engineers to consider sustainability development\nLife cycle costing and life cycle assessment are methodologies to support environmental and financial assessment of designs from cradle to grave\nThe steps of the life cycle assessment methodology\nAn example of an LCA and LCC study comparing 4 stormwater management solutions for a commercial development site in Lancaster County\, PA.\n\nPart 2 Economic and Ecological Benefits of Floodplain Restoration as a Stormwater Management Strategy\nPresenter | Ben Ehrhart\, PE\, CFM | LandStudies\, Inc \nPart 2 will review the beneficial functions of natural floodplains\, particularly with regard to peak attenuation\, volume reduction\, and water quality improvement. Current anthropogenic impairments will be discussed in the context of how these impairments limit the previously mentioned beneficial functions. Specific emphasis will be on legacy sediment. Restoration design approach and specific functions that address stormwater management requirements will be discussed. Case studies will be presented showing floodplain restoration projects that have successfully met stormwater management requirements associated with land development projects while providing significant ecological uplift and other community benefits. The case studies include post-construction monitoring data validating their performance. Economic advantages\, and ancillary benefits will also be discussed. \nLearning Objectives \n\nBeneficial functions of natural floodplains and the impairments that prevent these functions from being realized\nFloodplain restoration design approach\, and how this restores lost stormwater function\nDemonstration of private dollars funding ecological restoration projects with real economic value\nWater quality benefits of floodplain restoration and how these projects can be leveraged to meet water quality goals at a low cost to the public.\n\nSchedule\n\n\n12:00 PM– 2:00 AM | Webinar Presentation\n2:00 PM – 2:30  PM| Q & A\n\n\nMember Fee: $30 | Non Member Fee $60\n2 PDH (pending approval) \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Powerless | A History of the Nation's Major Power Blackouts
DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, almost every major city across the country has been affected by a blackout. \nThe most recent major blackout happened in February 2021. Texas suffered a major power crisis\, which came about because of severe winter storms sweeping across the United States. More than 4.5 million homes and businesses were left without power. November 9th\, 2021 marked the 56th anniversary of one of the largest electrical power blackouts in the United States – the Great Northeast Blackout of 1965. During this blackout\, 30 million people were left in the dark\, including all of New York City. Though significant government intervention and massive planning to prevent future blackouts followed\, New York went dark in 1997\, and again in 2004. \nBob’s presentation will cover the history of major blackouts in the U.S.\, their causes\, and what happens in the aftermath – including the impact a blackout has on communities. \nDiscussion Points \n\nHistory of major power blackouts and impact on society.\nWho oversees and regulates the nation’s electrical grid.\nWhy is High Voltage D.C. transmission a viable option?\n\nPresenter: \n\nBob Swayne\, MSEE\, PE | Senior Electrical Engineer\n\nSchedule\n\n\n12:00 PM– 1:00 AM | Webinar Presentation\n1:00 PM – 1:30  PM| Q & A\n\n\nMember Fee: $15 | Non Member Fee $30\n1 PDH* \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Webinar | PennDOT Digital Delivery Directive 2025
DESCRIPTION:A leading state for electronic construction management\, Pennsylvania is continuing its national leadership with the Digital Delivery Directive 2025. This game-changing effort will modernize the project delivery processes and contract document media used by PennDOT\, incorporating digital data and 3D technology. \nPennDOT’s Digital Delivery initiative aims to provide the ability to bid PennDOT construction projects using 3D engineered models by 2025. Project elements will be contained within a signed and sealed digital model that would include 2D and 3D model elements with attached attributes and references. Within a digital model\, users will also be able to access 2D representations of related traditional details or call outs\, relevant calculation data\, photos\, videos\, documents\, and hyperlinks attached by users to show more detail. \nThese digital models will be used on the project site by contractors and construction inspectors\, who will benefit from a more complete representation of the design intent delivered in a more directly usable format. The improved usability will enhance construction planning and mean less time extracting information\, such as for estimating and construction layout. \nThe shift to 3D will touch every part of the project delivery process\, from design to construction to post-construction activities such as maintenance and asset management. \nObjective: \nAttendees will learn how this initiative will reduce project costs\, improve design and construction efficiency\, and reduce project risks. The presenters will provide a status update for the initiative and discuss the roadmap moving forward. \n\n\nPresenters: \n\nAllen Melley\, PE | Project Development Engineer | PA Department of Transportation\nMark Chappell\, PE | Highway Administration Program Manager I | PA Department of Transportation\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n11:30 – 12:00 | Networking\n12:00 – 1:00 | Webinar Presentation\n1:00 – 1:30 | Q & A\n\n\nMember Fee: $15 | Non Member Fee $30\n1 PDH* \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:Senate to vote on HB2101
DESCRIPTION:HB 2101 makes a number of important changes to the licensing law for engineers\, land surveyors and geologists. While the major part of the bill makes a necessary clarification between land surveying and Geographic Information System (GIS) activities\, it ALSO rectifies concerns for engineers caused by a 2016 court decision. \nThe court decision could be interpreted to limit the practice of engineering to only projects that involve a “design”. In other words\, structural inspections\, environmental assessments\, and many other activities that have long been considered the practice of engineering in the other 49 states would not be considered the practice of engineering in Pennsylvania. \nContact your state Senator today!
