SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Bridges | Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing
DESCRIPTION:A Tale of Two Bridges | Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing\nThe Old Tappan Zee Bridge (Governor Malcolm Wilson–Tappan Zee Bridge) crossed the Hudson River at one of its widest points. It connected South Nyack in Rockland County with Tarrytown in Westchester County in the Lower Hudson Valley. The $4 billion New Tappan Zee Bridge (Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge) is a 3.1-mile multi-span dual-bridge replacement for the Governor Malcolm Wilson–Tappan Zee Bridge. \nThe geology at the site is characterized by Fordham Gneiss on the east bank Triassic Brunswick Formation on the west bank and generally consists of a thick deposit of soft\, organic soils overlying glacial lake varved clays up to 500 feet in thickness in between.  The bridge’s main span towers and anchor piers are open-ended steel pipe piles bearing on either glacial till or bedrock. The remaining portions of the bridge are supported by H-piles\, drilled shafts\, and steel pipe piles. \nDescription | This course provides a limited project overview of the two Tappan Zee Bridges\, which crossed the Hudson River\, summarizing some construction challenges. These bridges\, completed in 1955 and 2017\, crossed the Hudson at one of its widest points. The geology\, engineering\, design\, and construction of these projects will be discussed. \nObjective | Upon completion of the course\, participants will have an understanding of the challenges associated with two different specific construction projects\, completed decades apart with the same final objective – to span the Hudson River. \nPresenter | Craig Calabria\, PhD\, PE \nDate | Thursday\, March 17\, 2022 \nAgenda \n\n12:00 PM – 1:00 PM| Webinar\n1:00 PM – 1:30 PM | Q & A\n\nFee \n\nMember | $15\nNon-Member | $30\n\nPDH | 1 \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Risk Assessment 101: Building Blocks for Risk-Based Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:Description \nAll organizations are required to protect employees\, and other stakeholders\, from harm. Realistically\, not all hazards and risks are equal\, challenging the modern engineering professional to focus more resources on higher hazards and risks. In this way\, limited company resources can be optimally apportioned to improve facility safety performance and overall business performance. \nMany modern codes and standards allow for performance-based or risk-based compliance strategies. The fundamental approach to each of these alternative design basis starts with a foundation of risk analysis. \nThis webinar will provide an overview of conducting a technical risk assessment\, with emphasis on the following key steps: \n\nIdentify what could cause injury\, illness\, or other business loss events in your business (Hazards)\nDecide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and how seriously (the Risk)\nTake action to eliminate the hazard\, or if this isn’t possible\, control the risk (Controls)\nDetermine Acceptability of the Mitigated Risk Level (Approval and Governance)\n\nObjectives \n\nAwareness of basic qualitative and semi-quantitative methods for conducting hazard identification\, risk analysis\, and control evaluation.\nAbility to navigate a Risk Matrix and understanding organizational actions required for each output risk level.\nUsing Risk Assessments to focus organizational efforts on program improvement and focus areas of operational auditing.\nIntroduction to a 5-element approach to reliably deliver reliable risk control for any organization.\n\nPresenter | Michael D. Snyder\, PE\, CSP\, CFPS\, VP Operational Risk Management \nDate | Tuesday\, December 14\, 2021 \nAgenda \n\n12:00 PM – 1:00 PM| Webinar\n1:00 PM – 1:30 PM | Q & A\n\nFee \n\nMember | $15\nNon Member | $30\n\n1 PDH \nRegister today! \n

SUMMARY:Powerless | A History of the Nation's Major Power Blackouts
DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, almost every major city across the country has been affected by a blackout. \nThe most recent major blackout happened in February 2021. Texas suffered a major power crisis\, which came about because of severe winter storms sweeping across the United States. More than 4.5 million homes and businesses were left without power. November 9th\, 2021 marked the 56th anniversary of one of the largest electrical power blackouts in the United States – the Great Northeast Blackout of 1965. During this blackout\, 30 million people were left in the dark\, including all of New York City. Though significant government intervention and massive planning to prevent future blackouts followed\, New York went dark in 1997\, and again in 2004. \nBob’s presentation will cover the history of major blackouts in the U.S.\, their causes\, and what happens in the aftermath – including the impact a blackout has on communities. \nDiscussion Points \n\nHistory of major power blackouts and impact on society.\nWho oversees and regulates the nation’s electrical grid.\nWhy is High Voltage D.C. transmission a viable option?\n\nPresenter: \n\nBob Swayne\, MSEE\, PE | Senior Electrical Engineer\n\nSchedule\n\n\n12:00 PM– 1:00 AM | Webinar Presentation\n1:00 PM – 1:30  PM| Q & A\n\n\nMember Fee: $15 | Non Member Fee $30\n1 PDH* \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Webinar | PennDOT Digital Delivery Directive 2025
DESCRIPTION:A leading state for electronic construction management\, Pennsylvania is continuing its national leadership with the Digital Delivery Directive 2025. This game-changing effort will modernize the project delivery processes and contract document media used by PennDOT\, incorporating digital data and 3D technology. \nPennDOT’s Digital Delivery initiative aims to provide the ability to bid PennDOT construction projects using 3D engineered models by 2025. Project elements will be contained within a signed and sealed digital model that would include 2D and 3D model elements with attached attributes and references. Within a digital model\, users will also be able to access 2D representations of related traditional details or call outs\, relevant calculation data\, photos\, videos\, documents\, and hyperlinks attached by users to show more detail. \nThese digital models will be used on the project site by contractors and construction inspectors\, who will benefit from a more complete representation of the design intent delivered in a more directly usable format. The improved usability will enhance construction planning and mean less time extracting information\, such as for estimating and construction layout. \nThe shift to 3D will touch every part of the project delivery process\, from design to construction to post-construction activities such as maintenance and asset management. \nObjective: \nAttendees will learn how this initiative will reduce project costs\, improve design and construction efficiency\, and reduce project risks. The presenters will provide a status update for the initiative and discuss the roadmap moving forward. \n\n\nPresenters: \n\nAllen Melley\, PE | Project Development Engineer | PA Department of Transportation\nMark Chappell\, PE | Highway Administration Program Manager I | PA Department of Transportation\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n11:30 – 12:00 | Networking\n12:00 – 1:00 | Webinar Presentation\n1:00 – 1:30 | Q & A\n\n\nMember Fee: $15 | Non Member Fee $30\n1 PDH* \nRegister Today!
